As one of the many divisions under Yahoo, Yahoo Small Business is focused on helping small businesses succeed online. It offers a wide range of solutions including web hosting, local marketing, domain registration, and professional consultation services.

Over the years, Yahoo Small Business has developed many royal customers and is attracting more. Customers choose to go with this host mainly because of its good reputation and reliable performance.

However, after a careful study on its plans, we have found obvious defects in the hosting features as well as complaints about its customer services. We feel that people should be informed of all the information, be it positive or negative, before they go with this host. That’s why we publish the Yahoo Small Business Review.

The company offers 3 hosting plans, namely, Basic plan, Advance plan and Premier plan. Each annual plan is priced at $3.75/mo, $5.99/mo and $8.99/mo for the first 3 months and rises to $4.99/mo, $7.99/mo and $11.99/mo after then. Note that such pricing only applies to new customers and expires on 12/31/2014. People are allowed to ask for refund within 30 days of the initial order but need to pay $9.95 for domain registration.

Yahoo Small Business Speed Review 3.50 of 5

Unlike some lesser hosting providers, Yahoo Small Business has its own redundant data centers that are geographically distributed to better serve the customers around the world. It constantly embraces new technologies such as optical transport to improve connectivity.

These technologies help to deliver fast performance most of the time. Yet, the servers may still go slow occasionally. For example, a customer named Rick Conley complained that sometimes it took him hours to get an FTP connection to upload files to his website. Another customer named Annie Amen also suffered from incredibly slow page loading speed although her blogs had just dozens of pages with less than 300 visitors per month.

Yahoo Small Business Reliability Review 4.00 of 5

Thousands of hosting providers promise to offer 99.9% uptime but only about 1% of them really make it. Yahoo Small Business no doubt belongs to the 1% group. It is able to keep each site up and running even under heavy traffic volume by deploying asset caching and load balancing across multiple servers. Its outstanding reliability can be testified by customer feedbacks. According to our survey, about 90% customers would give 4 out of 5 stars for the uptime they had experienced so far.

Yahoo Small Business Feature Review 3.00 of 5

The 3 plans are designed for small personal sites, business sites and large-traffic sites, so they offer varied resources. For example, the Basic plan comes with 10 site pages, 250 email addresses, 100GB disk space, 1000GB bandwidth while the Premier plan does not set a limit on such resources.

Additional features such as Secure FTP, PHP, MySQL, Snapshot Backups and SSL certificate are exclusive to the Advanced plan and Premier plan. $100 marketing credit is available with all plans to help customers promote their sites on Yahoo Bing Network.

There are obvious shortcomings in terms of hosting features. One is with the control panel because the company does not offer cPanel or any other flexible control panel. In fact, the company does not make any demo or give any information about its control panel. Based on customer reviews, we can only tell that the User Interface there is not very friendly. Another problem is that all plans only offer one domain. This means that users can host only ONE website no matter which plan they choose.

Yahoo Small Business Technical Support Review 3.50 of 5

Perhaps technical support is the least satisfactory part among all the 4 aspects reviewed. For one thing, the company only offers phone and email support channels which are open from 7:00 a.m. to 5 p.m. on workdays only. For another, the hold time seems to be very long. Some customers said that they had to wait for 30 minutes before they could reach a real support staff.

Except for incomplete support channels and slow response, the company has done a very good job in feeding customers with useful materials. The topics listed on the Customer Support pages are well chosen; the tutorials there are well-illustrated; and articles produced by Advisers are very enlightening.
