How to Create a Full Width Page on Your WordPress Site

updated on May 23, 2017
How to Create a Full Width Page on Your WordPress Site Full width pages are commonly used to present some important content from which you definitely do not want your visitors to be distracted. On such pages, you don't need the extra information in sidebars because complete concentration is required.

If you are lucky, the theme that you are using should have included a full width template that allows you to create full width pages easily without making any extra efforts. However, some WordPress themes are not built with a ready-to-use template, and in this case, you need to create a new page template manually. Fortunately, the process is not complicated.

This post will cover the methods to take in both situations.

Use the Built-in Full Width Page Template

If you are new to WordPress, you can check whether your theme includes a premade full width page template easily by opening any page on your WordPress site, finding the "Template" section on the right side of the page, and browsing through the available options in the dropdown. You should find an option similar to "Full Width Page".

Built-In Full Width Page Template

Since such an option is available, just select it, and add any content you want in the visual editor or text editor. Previewing the content, you will find it is displayed on a full width page with no sidebar showing up. That's all. There is no other thing to worry about.

However, what will happen if you have installed a WordPress theme that is not designed with such a template? There are two choices open to you. One is to change your theme, and the other is to follow our guide below to create a full width page template by yourself. We'd suggest the latter way because you will not want to lose your customization while switching the theme.

Create a Full Width Page Template Manually

Though you need to deal with coding by taking this method, the entire process may not be as complex as you expected since you only need to make small tweaks to an existing page template. But before starting, make sure you have created a child theme for your theme, or you have made a complete backup for your site in case that there is anything wrong that breaks you site.

When you are ready, access your server through cPanel or FTP, and find the theme that is active on your WordPress site. Among the theme files, locate page.php and download it to your computer.

page.php

Next, create a new plain text file with Notepad or any other text editor and name it as something like full-width.php. Then, open page.php and copy all the content in it to the newly created file.

Copy Content

In the new file, first of all you should give the template a name. Just add the name in the following way. Note that it should be placed at the top of the file.

Name the Page Template

The next task is to find the following piece of code in the new file and remove it, so sidebars will not be displayed when this page template is used. You can also remove the footer section in the same way, but we don't suggest doing this.

Remove Sidebar

Now, save the file and upload it to the same folder as the page.php file. After the upload succeeds, you can log into your WordPress dashboard, create a new page, and find the new full width page template in the dropdown.

Upload Template File

Congratulations, you have got everything done. Just start publishing your full width pages to generate conversions.
