Established in 2009, StableHost is quite a young and small Linux web hosting company which has approximately 28,000 domains under management. As is stated on the official website, the company consists of a team of about 10 employees.

Powered by such a small team, StableHost does not invest in its own data center. Instead, it has rent some dedicated servers from SingleHop. Now the company offers 3 data center locations including Phoenix, AZ, Chicago, IL and Amsterdam, NL. All the facilities belong to SingleHop.

StableHost has been focusing on shared web hosting, although they also provide a wide variety of other services including reseller hosting, VPS, dedicated server and domain name registration. Based on this fact, the review is made on the shared products. Other services will not be discussed here, but you can also learn some basic information about them.

StableHost Speed Review 3.00 of 5

As is mentioned before, StableHost does not run their own data center. Therefore, the hardware and network infrastructure are out of their control. But fortunately, SingleHop is quite a good dedicated server provider that can guarantee the power and network consistency.

After conducting a long-time monitoring, we find that StableHost can deliver good speed which is slightly faster than the average of the industry. The company has utilized multiple speeding-up technologies including SSDs and Litespeed PHP caching. Below are the server response records for the past 30 days.

StableHost Reliability Review 2.00 of 5

StableHost provides shared and reseller hosting users with a guarantee of 99.9% uptime. If the company fails to meet the guarantee, a credit of one-month hosting fee can be requested. However, there is no uptime statistics published on StableHost website, and the server uptime cannot be defined by website owners.

According to our monitoring, StableHost cannot always fulfill the commitment of 99.9% uptime for shared hosting, and the average uptime in the past half a year is 99.85%. Read the records for the last 30 days.

StableHost Technical Support Review 1.50 of 5

Due to the lack of human resource, StableHost only offers technical support through email. Like most other web hosting providers, the company provides a ticket system. The email and ticket support is available 24x7.

A phone number is also given on StableHost website, but it is prepared for sales support only. Besides, the sales department is open during 9 AM to 5 PM MST. In terms of live chat, there is no clue about when it will be available.

StableHost has maintained a knowledgebase, but the resources in it are quite limited as there are less than 150 tutorials in total. We have used the email support for several times. Responses were usually made within 12 hours. Simple issues were resolved quickly, but when there was a performance issue, we always got a suggestion for an upgrade to VPS.

StableHost Shared Web Hosting Plans 2.50 of 5

Recently, StableHost has made a significant update to their shared hosting plans. They once offered 3 upgradable plans with different amounts of disk storage, but now there are 2 completely new plans available.

Named as Starter and Pro, the new plans share nearly the same feature except that the former supports to host 1 domain only while the latter allows hosting unlimited websites. The prices for the plans are $4.95/mo and $8.95/mo respectively, and there are discounts for annually billing customers.

Both plans include 1 CPU core, 1 GB RAM, a maximum of 15 PHP processes and 15 MySQL connections. If you want more resources or better support (through phone), you can purchase the enterprise hosting plan Platinum which costs $29.95/mo. The cost of a new domain starts from $14.95/mo.

Below are the main pros and cons of StableHost shared web hosting.

  • Easy-to-use tools: cPanel control panel, Softaculous script installer & website builder.
  • Unlimited disk space, bandwidth, MySQL databases & FTP accounts.
  • Unlimited email accounts, forwarders, auto-responders and mailing lists.
  • Development features: PHP 5.2/5.3/5.4, MySQL 5.5, Perl, Python & Ruby on Rails.
  • Daily R1Soft backups which increase the security of website data.
  • SSH charges an additional fee of $2.5.
  • The cost of $4.95/mo is quite high for hosting a single domain, not to mention there are no extras like advertising credits and free domain.
  • No refund after the first 45 days. StableHost guarantees 45-day refund for first-time accounts, and after the initial period, there is no way to get a penny back. This guarantee makes it a little bit risky to buy the 2-year or 3-year plan.
