Declared to be established in 2002, SimpleHost is a provider of shared hosting, VPS and reseller hosting. Holding the goal to offer simple and easy-to-use hosting solutions, the company has made some efforts in improving their user interface and optimizing the servers for popular open source software.

Keeping things simple is good because most webmasters do not need the hosting experience to be complicated. However, what surprises us is that SimpleHost looks too "simple" to convince experienced users that it is a good hosting choice.

For example, when we landed on the homepage of the web host for the first time, we were stunned by the lack of so much useful information that we were looking for. The company does not even have separate pages for each type of hosting product, and there is no contact page, either.

Holding the doubt of the service quality of SimpleHost, we began monitoring the performance and trying their shared hosting in March 2015. With enough information collected, now we work out this SimpleHost review to tell why the company is not a good option for shared hosting users. Reseller hosting and VPS are not analyzed here because we have not tested these products yet.

SimpleHost Speed Review 2.50 of 5

According to the official site, SimpleHost does not operate their own data center, and instead, they have been cooperating with DataCenter101 for a data center in Columbus, OH. In terms of the network, the only piece of information is that the infrastructure is powered by Cisco equipment. No more details could be found.

The bad news is that SimpleHost has frequent network issues periodically. For example, in November 2015, there was a network outage lasting about 4 hours and two other network issues one of which was resolved 4 days after it was founded.

Our expert monitoring tells that SimpleHost performed well in speed in December. Below are the recent stats of the server response time.

SimpleHost Reliability Review 3.00 of 5

According to our experience, SimpleHost is able to ensure a secure and reliable hosting environment. The Dell servers, along with the redundant power sources and R1Soft Backups, have contributed much to the result.

Although not being great, SimpleHost uptime is good indeed, with few serious downtimes. The guarantee of 99.9% uptime has been fulfilled in 7 of the past 10 months during our monitoring. You can see the recent uptime records in below.

SimpleHost Technical Support Review 2.00 of 5

SimpleHost claims to offer 24x7 support through phone calls, live chat and a ticket system. However, we do not think the company's support services are good due to the following reasons.
  • When we clicked on the button which ought to generate a live chat window, we got nothing. So we doubt whether the company provides such a service.
  • The support team is of low efficiency. Most tickets we submitted were answered after 3 hours.
  • The knowledgebase is quite limited with about 100 articles only. No FAQs, video tutorials or education channels are offered.

SimpleHost Shared Hosting Plan Review 2.50 of 5

Keeping simplicity in mind, SimpleHost provides only one shared hosting plan named Simple Plan. This plan is priced at $5/mo for annual billing, $6/mo for semi-annual billing and $7/mo for monthly billing. The prices are quite affordable even when compared with the cheap web hosting solutions in the market.

However, to judge the value of Simple Plan, you should also take the features into account. To ensure you a quick understanding of what are included in the plan, we will present the main advantages and shortcomings in below.

  • Simple Plan comes with unlimited disk storage, monthly bandwidth, MySQL databases, FTP accounts, and email accounts.
  • The control panel included is cPanel, and it is integrated with a script installer.
  • Some advanced features, such as SSH, Cron Jobs, Perl and Python are available.
  • A free domain is offered for annual billing users.

  • Only 3 websites are allowed on one account.
  • There is no upgrade option on the shared hosting level. So if you want to manage more domains from a single interface, you will have to purchase a VPS which is priced at $25/mo.
  • Email spam protection and backups are charged additionally.
  • SimpleHost does not offer a full feature list, so you may need to contact the sales team to make sure they have what you want.
  • Some commonly seen features like Ruby and PostgreSQL are not included in Simple Plan.

Important Notices about SimpleHost Shared Hosting 1.00 of 5

Besides what discussed above, you also have to pay attention to the following facts before making the decision.
  • Refund policies are not specified. You cannot find a refund guarantee on SimpleHost website even in the TOS. They only say that they do not offer pro-rated refund, while there is no information about how customers can get a refund and which fees are non-refundable.
  • The resource usage is not clear. Although the company claims unlimited disk space and bandwidth, there are indeed limits. However, as most shared hosting providers maintain an easy-to-understand usage policy, SimpleHost does not offer such a thing. Therefore, you could get warned or your account could be suspended easily because you never know how close you have come to the limits.
