Established in 1998, Servage is a hosting brand that belongs to Servage Group AB, a company based in Sweden. Since Servage targets the global market, they now have offices in Germany, Australia, Sweden and the US. However, the company's servers are all housed in a data center in Germany, with no second location available.

Servage has been positioning themselves as a leading role in the hosting industry. They claim to be hosting over 160,000 websites all over the world, but according to calculations, the real number of domains under their management is about 30,000 only. Besides, the company has been receiving low user ratings in the recent 5 years for poor reliability and technical support.

Servage offers both shared web hosting and VPS hosting products. However, this review will focus on the former product only because it is much popular than the latter. You can learn all the details in below to know why Servage is not recommended for shared hosting.

Servage Speed Review 2.50 of 5

As is known, Servage uses a single data center located in Germany, and they don't offer much detail about the facilities. Theoretically, with such a server location, you cannot expect fast speed if you and your targeted customers are located outside the European countries.

Our monitoring has also proved this. The server responses are far from being fast. But fortunately, the speed is not too slow, either, which can be seen in the screenshot below. Besides, among the complaints against Servage, there are few concerning the speed. This should attribute much to the company's partnership with 20 bandwidth providers including AT&T and Level 3.

Servage Reliability Review 1.50 of 5

Servage claims to deliver 99.98% uptime with the use of their advanced clustered platform. On this platform, every website is served by a cluster which features multiple servers, so that the service availability can be guaranteed.

However, the uptime and service reliability are the poorest parts of the web hosting services offered by Servage, according to user feedback. The common problems include:
  • There are frequent storage failures which result in the loss of data.
  • Many database problems occur, and databases are not updated regularly.
  • Many websites got hacked on Servage servers. This usually led to several days of downtime, and the company would blame the users for the trouble and suspend their accounts.
  • It is reported by a number of Servage users that their websites have been shut down with no prior notice. All data is lost, and there is no way to recover the sites unless a local backup is available. Unreasonable account suspensions are even more common.

In fact, Servage hasn't been offering great uptime that is up to 99.98%, and the company doesn't provide an SLA for the uptime. Our monitoring tells that the company's uptime didn't even reach 99.9% in the last 30 days.

Servage Technical Support Review 1.50 of 5

Servage is not excellent in technical support, and there are several convincing evidences for this conclusion. You should never expect much for the company to assist you when you need because:
  • Servage only offers technical support through the help desk which includes a ticket system. Live chat is available for pre-sales inquiries only, and phone support is simply not a support option.
  • Servage promises an average of 20-minute response time for tickets. However, the actual waiting time is several times longer. You have to wait at least 4-6 hours for the initial response.
  • The support representatives are neither kind nor patient. They could blame you for the issues on your site instead of helping you out. Sometimes no solution is given by the so-called "professional" support team.

Servage Web Hosting Pricing & Features 3.00 of 5

Servage offers only one shared hosting package which is priced at $7.99/mo for 3/6/12-month terms and $6.95/mo for 24-month terms. Pay attention that the 3-month term requires an expensive setup fee of $14.99/mo.

The single web hosting package includes 750 GB disk space and unlimited bandwidth. This sounds great, but there are indeed limits for the usage which you will never know because the sales representatives won't tell you the actual limits.

Even though, the package is quite affordable for annual terms considering that it allows you to host multiple websites without paying for add-on domains.
Servage has a clear feature list. After browsing the list in detail and reading dozens of user reviews, we have concluded the following pros and cons in terms of the company's web hosting features.

  • 1000 MySQL databases and unlimited FTP accounts.
  • Unlimited email accounts are available, with free anti-spam protection.
  • IPv6 is supported.
  • A free domain is accessible regardless of the billing cycle.
  • The common scripting features are all included, such as PHP 5.4, Ruby on Rails, Python, Perl, SSI, cron jobs, CURL, and .htaccess.

  • The custom control panel is hard-to-navigate. Besides, the features included in it are quite limited. For example, there is no backup option, and the file manager is not intuitive. These disadvantages make Servage not as competitive as the popular cPanel web hosts.
  • Servage doesn't provide free backups. You have to back up databases and files manually since the control panel cannot be used for backups, either.
  • You can only ask for refunds within the first 14 days of signup. Servage doesn't state in the TOS which fees will be deducted from the refunds, so you are suggested to make the policies clear before making a purchase.

Better Shared Hosting Providers 5.00 of 5

Servage offers good prices and features (except for the control panel), but the poor reliability and support bring a sharp decline in the value of their web hosting service. Considering this fact, this web host is not good enough to be recommended.

Instead, we would suggest the following shared web hosting providers if you want to start a blog, a forum or a small online store now. They all offer cPanel, good uptime, and a long trial/refund period.
