PhotonVPS, the domain registered in 1999 but it's operated newly, is a hosting provider focusing on the supplying of VPS hosting solutions. Apart from VPS, the company also offers cloud hosting, servers, backups and other relevant services.

PhotonVPS provides VPS hosting plans that support both Linux and Windows platforms. Customers are provided with six solutions for Windows hosting as well as Linux hosting. All plans are semi-managed. PhotonVPS takes the responsibility of installing software at customers' requests, and looking into load issues, hardware/server failure and network problems.

As for the pricing of these plans, the pricing strategy is quite unfair to customers. At the first sight, you may be surprised that PhotonVPS should charge so low for three relatively basic plans – SSD-X, SSD-1 and SSD-2, because the discounted prices of the three plans are $5.95/mo, $10.95/mo and $20.95/mo respectively. However, the average prices of the other three plans are high to $95/mo, which is largely higher than the average in the market.

This is the tricky game that they offer the very cheap plan for your first payment with the very poor service. When you come to their technical support, they always try to persuade you upgrading to their most expensive plan.

According to the oversold machines, you need to know that even the basic three plans are not cost-effective at all, because they do have limited features, bad loading speed, poor reliability and non-human support, which is explained in detail as following.

PhotonVPS Speed Review 1.00 of 5

Frankly speaking, the company performs very bad in loading speed. Even the sites hosted with them load slower than a shared web hosting service from some reputed companies.

Based on our industry experience, we know usually some good VPS providers sell 50 nodes for VPS. Usually each node costs $20-$40 per month. As their unreasonable cheap price and bad performance, we think this company sells at least 300 nodes on a machine.

The following chart is the loading speed comparison with BlueHost and InMotion Hosting. The big difference helps you be clear what you paid is what you will get.

PhotonVPS Reliability Review 2.00 of 5

PhotonVPS promises 99.9% uptime, but it fails to keep it. The company claims that it has a state-of-the-art data center in Los Angeles. It is claimed that the data center is well equipped with Tier-4 facilities in every aspect including power supply, cooling system, network and security. The truth is that it underperforms in recent years especially in 2013.

In 2013, PhotonVPS users encountered the most frequent downtime ever. Customers at home and abroad are constantly disturbed by unexpected downtime. Some users even reflect that there was a time when downtime incurred daily with minimum 1 hour per day. What's worse, there were many times when websites were offline, and customers had to reboot but always failed. To be honest, PhotonVPS is not reliable. For this reason alone, we would not recommend it.

PhotonVPS Feature Review 2.00 of 5

As is mentioned above, the three basic plans are very affordable. PhotonVPS promises that affordable price does not mean sacrificing quality. However, there is a massive gap between the truth and pledge. SSD-X has only 512 MB dedicated RAM, one core, 10 GB SSD disk space, 2000 GB bandwidth and free 2Gbps DDoS mitigation. All control panels including cPanel, Plesk and DirectAdmin cannot be used even if you are willing to pay extra money.

No matter which control panel you choose, you have to pay extra $12.00 per month unless you purchase SSD-3, SSD-4 and SSD-5 which are more expensive than they should be. Speaking of the DDoS mitigation, PhotonVPS only provides free 2 Gbps DDoS. The services for 3 Gbps DDoS and 10 Gbps DDoS are priced at $49.00/mo and $99/mo severally.

PhotonVPS Technical Support Review 2.00 of 5

PhotonVPS offers phone call and email/ticket support. Besides, clients can also seek help in its knowledgebase, where some general questions are solved. The company also provides online chat. However, in many users' eyes, the so-called online support is an "offline" chat support because employees are always offline which is disappointing but apprehensible.

Besides, many customers complain that the PhotonVPS service is not active in many cases especially when its staffs realize that you are not a potential customer or you come with complaints and dissatisfaction. The result is that grumpy staff attitude worsens its support.
