Being a well-known domain registrar, NameCheap also offers a wide variety of hosting services including shared hosting, VPS hosting, dedicated servers and reseller hosting. This time we'd like to offer detailed information about the VPS packages with focuses put on pricing, feature, uptime, speed and technical support.
Before releasing this review, we have been experiencing and monitoring NameCheap VPS hosting services for a couple of months. Based on the data collected from real experience as well as the survey of hundreds of consumer comments, we have given the ratings below.
Packages & Pricing
NameCheap has released 4 Xen packages on the VPS hosting level with different sizes and prices. Named as VPS Lite, VPS 1, VPS 2 and VPS 3, the plans are priced from $16.95/mo, $26.95/mo, $44.95/mo and $63.95/mo. All of the packages support multiple billing cycles including 1 month, 3 months, 6 months and 1 year, which gives subscribers enough flexibility in choosing the right one.
As the company offers self-managed, managed and fully managed virtual private servers, the prices mentioned above are only the basic costs of the self-managed service. For managed and fully managed services, there is an additional cost of $30/mo and $75/mo respectively, which means that the cheapest fully managed VPS package costs a minimum of 101.95/mo (VPS Lite does not support to be fully managed), which is much more expensive than the average in the market.
VPS Hosting Features
The 4 packages offered by NameCheap include different allotments server resources and different levels of server configurations and control. However, there are still some similarities among them. For instance, all of them are prepared with the choices of several operating systems and instant setup, but none of them includes free access to cPanel control panel, Softaculous 1-click script installer or WHMCS.
For each of the packages, customers have the ability to customize the server configurations and add extra RAM, disk space, bandwidth and dedicated IPs dynamically when the demands grow. For more information about server resources and other features, check the table below.
|Feature||VPS Lite||VPS 1||VPS 2||VPS 3|
|Disk Storage||15 GB||30 GB||60 GB||100 GB|
|Dedicated RAM||512 MB||1024 MB||2048 MB||3072 MB|
|Burstable RAM||512 MB||1024 MB||2048 MB||3072 MB|
|Bandwidth||100 GB||250 GB||500 GB||750 GB|
|WHMCS Branded License||$8/mo||$8/mo||$8/mo||$8/mo|
Regarding the features, you may have noticed some of the following limitations coming with NameCheap virtual private servers.
- The disk space, bandwidth, RAM and CPU cores included in the VPS hosting plans are quite limited considering the premium prices. You can easily get a self-managed VPS with the same resources at half the price asked by NameCheap.
- The extra server resources are expensive. For example. 100 GB additional bandwidth charges a high rate of $10/mo, and 128 MB RAM requires $8/mo.
- The cheapest VPS Lite plan, although being priced from $16.95/mo, does not include any backup storage.
- Even the fully managed VPS hosting plans do not include cPanel, Softaculous and WHMCS for free. These features are completely free to use when with most other managed VPS hosting providers.
NameCheap has a special Hosting Guarantee in which the company claims to offer the best server and network uptime, speed and security consistently. To cover the promise, the company operates several data centers in different locations in the North America and Europe, which ensures that websites are reliable and fast even for visitors outside the US.
Each of the data centers is housed with the latest servers from Dell, HP and Supermicro running CloudLinux which features high performance. Besides, both the power and network are equipped with full redundancy to guarantee the maximum uptime and speed. Moreover, all the data centers are under 24x7 monitoring from a dedicated team.
To find out whether the company has fulfilled the commitment of 99.9% uptime and fast speed, we have been personally monitoring the uptime and server resource speed and collecting the real statistics. The results for the past month are as follows.
NameCheap offers 24x7 technical support and customer service through live chat, Help Desk and community forums. No phone support is available. According to our real experience of trying the live support, the response time is quite fast sometimes, but we also encountered the problem that at most times the speed was far away from being satisfactory.
For people getting into troubles with the services from NameCheap, our suggestion is to browse the knowledgebase for written or video tutorials first, and then try live chat if the knowledgebase includes no solution to the problem. For self-improvement of skills, forums are good places to communicate with others.
When contacting the support team for assistance, it is important to know what the technical support covers. Depending on the different levels of server management, the provider is responsible for different parts of the VPS hosting.
For instance, users of self-managed VPS cannot rely on NameCheap support team for the support about system monitoring, Apache, DNS, MySQL, FTP, server backups and any third-party scripts like WordPress and Drupal because these things are all the sole responsibility of the users themselves. Those using managed VPS can depend on the provider for CentOS setup, system monitoring and the support of the LAMP stack, however, they have to deal with off-site backups and third-party scripts by themselves, too.
Money Back Guarantee
For the VPS hosting plans, NameCheap offers a 14-day money-back guarantee. When users cancel their accounts within 14 days, they may be able to get a refund of the hosting fee. The refund does not apply to IP addresses, account renewals, SSL certificates, cPanel license, Softaculous, and any domain registration. In addition, no refund is provided for accounts cancelled after the first 14 days.
Is the Service Worth Trying?
NameCheap is a reliable VPS hosting provider that is suitable for people with enough budget. However, it is not one of the best VPS hosting choices
considering the low cost-effectiveness as some of the packages cost even more than a dedicated server. For webmasters who want the power of a managed virtual private server at a much more affordable price, the web hosts listed in the table below are recommended.
