Linode, focusing on Linux VPS hosting solutions, is a professional hosting provider in the US. The company was established by Christopher Aker in mid-2003 and quickly developed thousands of users. At the same year, it opened the Fremont, California and Texas, Dallas data centers. Later in 2007, its Atlanta, Georgia data center was also opened. In the following years, Linode established data centers in Newark, London and Tokyo respectively. Since then, all these data centers have been connected with each other into a powerful network.

Linode offers a variety of products and services for its customers, and among them, the most notable is cloud hosting and VPS hosting solutions. Linode only provides Linux-based VPS and of course, it offers plenty of choices to fit different users’ needs.

At present, Linode releases nine VPS solutions and the price range of the nine plans is starting from $10/mo to $960/mo. You may be surprised that Linode enables customers to get VPS at such a cost low to $10/mo. But these prices are starting price, which means that you have to pay extra money for extra services. And these additional services are necessary and essential for the smooth running of websites.

In terms of payment, Linode only supports credit card. Besides, it provides a seven days money back guarantee, which means that you have only one week to decide whether Linode is the one you want. Also, after the initial seven days, you need to pay extra $5 for the cancellation even if you get a prorated refund.

Linode Speed Review 2.50 of 5

Linode owns six data centers in Asia-Pacific, Europe and North America respectively and customers are allowed to choose the closest one to locate their servers for better connection and network.

By rights, Linode should have performed well in speed. But the truth tells a totally different story. Our monitoring team has an awful experience with Linode because of its low speed. The average speed is beyond 800ms, and it is unstable, which is obvious when in peaks. Sometimes we have to wait for over two minutes before visiting a page with few pictures. It is clear that Linode has much to improve in the page load time optimization.

Linode Reliability Review 3.00 of 5

With the support of its robust facilities, the company offers a standard 99.9% uptime guarantee. However, the guarantee proves to be a slogan. According to our monitoring team who has followed Linode for over three months, it is not so stable as it claims before. We encounter downtime frequently. The only thing that comforts us is that its maintenance is faster than we expect.

Another thing that needs mentioning is that in April 2013, there is a serious issue about Linode security. According to its blogs, Linode was attacked by some hackers but it denied that these hackers get access to customers’ passwords and billing information. Then, the firm advised users to change passwords, including the Linode Shell passwords and API key. However, hackers later presented proofs, proving the confidential information was taken.

Linode Feature Review 2.00 of 5

The nine Linode hosting plans are equipped with different RAM, CPU, Storage, Network In and Out. The most basic plan includes only 1 GB RAM, 1 core CPU, and 24 GB SSD, while the most expensive one has 96 GB RAM, 20 core CPU and 1920 GB SSD. And now, we would like to present more information about their features to help you get a better understanding of Linode. All plans come with some significant features you may concern, which are listed as below:
  • Dedicated IP address that ensures fast response when in peaks;
  • Managed DNS with API, transfer pooling, HA and clustering support;
  • Eight processor Xen instances, full SSH and root access.

Besides, Linode offers no control panel or any virtualization applications. If you do not have professional knowledge and skills in VPS, you may encounter difficulties when managing websites even if you have root or SSH access. Plus, you need to pay extra money for Linode backup service.

Linode Technical Support Review 1.50 of 5

The company does provide professional technical support that can be reached via email, ticket and telephone. These supports are available anytime so you can contact them in any way you like whenever you need. However, as all VPS plans are by default unmanaged, if you need technical support, you have to pay extra money.

Besides, the company gives customers other platforms to seek help, such as Guides, Tutorials, forums and blogs. One downside is that only by using phone call support, can you get timely and effective solutions especially for some professional issues.
