Having been in business for about 10 years, Gate.com is a web host focusing on offering affordable yet reliable web hosting services. Currently, the company provides shared hosting and VPS plans for both Linux and Windows operating systems. Also, some other services like domain registration, email services and online marketing are available.

To work out a comprehensive Gate.com review, we have carefully considered every crucial aspect of the company's hosting services, including the reliability, support, speed, ease of use as well as the price tags.

After collecting enough information, we finally come to the conclusion that Gate.com is not a good hosting choice to recommend even though it is able to deliver excellent performance. There are many reasons for this, for example, the numerous complaints, severe billing scams and limited features. You can find all the details in the sections below.

Gate Speed Review 3.00 of 5

Gate.com does not offer any information about how many data centers it is using and where the data centers are located. However, our monitoring shows that the company can deliver quite fast server response speed and page loads. The server response time is usually less than 300ms. However, you may still experience latency at some peak times.

The reasons of Gate.com fast speed mainly lie in the reliable facilities and the first-rate network infrastructure. To be more specific,
  • SSD drives are used on Gate.com servers, which guarantees much faster content-serving speed than the normal HDDs.
  • The company's network features outstanding capacity, peering and high-performance hardware. Each server is connected to two Cisco switches through two Ethernet connections, and each switch is also connected to two core routers with multiple border routers. The network load can be handled properly.
  • Multiple bandwidth providers are involved in Gate.com network, including Level(3), InterNAP and MCI. The sufficient choices increase the possibility that website data is transferred via the shortest possible path.
Below is a piece of our statistics about Gate.com server response speed.

Gate Reliability Review 3.50 of 5

With the traditional hosting, websites are served with a single server, so that if there a hardware failure, you will experience a downtime, and there is nothing you can do but to wait for the hosting provider to fix the problem. However, things are different with Gate.com because the company is famous for the clustering technology.

Gate.com uses server clusters instead of independent servers in the entire hosting environment. Even if one server is down, the accessibility of your website will not be affected. Besides, with the clustering technology, you can get more resources whenever you need.

Another factor that contributes much to the reliability of Gate.com hosting services is that the company powers all the data centers with batteries instead of directly pulling power to facilities from grids. The batteries, then, are recharged by grids simultaneously. When there is a power failure of the grids, backup generators kick off immediately to take over the recharging.

According to our testing, Gate.com is able to offer good uptime which averages over 99.9% in the last year. This is the largest highlight we have found with this web host. Some more evidence is in below.

Gate Technical Support Review 1.50 of 5

Just like any other web host, Gate.com offers a knowledgebase to provide quick solutions to those who meet some common hosting issues. The knowledgebase covers multiple topics including email, domain, control panel and FTP. However, the navigation is quite hard. There is no search function built in the knowledgebase, so you have to locate your issue manually in the category it is in. Besides, most of the tutorials are found to be not helpful.

If you need help from a support staff, Gate.com provides three ways for contacting the support team, including phone, email and live chat. Generally speaking, you can reach a support representative quickly via phone, but the situation is different for the other two communication methods.
  • Emails are guaranteed to be replied within 12 hours, but the real responses can be much slower. In an unlucky event, your email might be simply ignored.
  • Live chat is mainly used for sales inquiries instead of technical support. Besides, there is always no representative available on the live chat. You will be asked to leave your name, email address and questions and then wait for 12 hours or longer for a possible response from the company. The lack of efficient live chat support reduces the competitiveness of Gate.com to a large extent.

Gate.com Shared Hosting Plans 1.50 of 5

Gate.com offers three shared hosting plans named Basic, Business and Professional. All of these plans include unlimited bandwidth, basic web stats software, a shared SSL certificate and email spam protection.

As both Linux hosting and Windows hosting are available with Gate.com, you can choose your own platform when placing an order. However, this capability is not included in the cheapest Basic plan.

Depending on the operating system, you get access to cPanel or Plesk control panel. Both control panels are feature rich and easy-to-use, but you have to note that Gate.com is not utilizing the latest versions of them.

The three plans are priced at $4.95/mo, $9.95/mo and $29.95/mo, and if you choose the annual term, you can get two months for free. Among the plans, Business and Professional include unlimited disk storage and email accounts, 10 MySQL databases, and many other features. However, the Basic plan comes with very limited features.
  • It includes 20 GB storage and 25 email accounts.
  • You are allowed to host one domain only.
  • The site builder included in this plan allows creating 10 pages only.
  • No MySQL database is offered for this plan.
In fact, many more limitations can be found for Gate.com shared hosting plans, some of which are listed in below.
  • Basic and Business cannot be used to host online shops.
  • The use of CGI scripts is limited. Any script that is considered to affect the server performance will be removed without notice.
  • If you want to use cron jobs, you have to ask the support team to review them before you can actually run them. The review may take days or longer, and you might not get permissions.
  • All web hosting accounts are limited to 5000 files.
  • Chat rooms are not allowed to be installed on any web hosting account.

Gate.com VPS Hosting Plans 2.00 of 5

Besides shared hosting, Gate.com also offers managed VPS hosting. Currently, there are three VPS plans for Linux and Windows respectively. Below is the basic information about the Linux VPS hosting plans. Note that the Windows VPS plans have the same names and server resources while being $10/mo more expensive.
  • Basic: $19.95/mo, including 15 GB SSD storage, 1 GB RAM, unlimited bandwidth and 2 IPs.
  • Developer: $49.95/mo, including 60 GB SSD storage, 4 GB RAM, unlimited bandwidth and 2 IPs.
  • Pro: $99.95/mo, including 240 GB SSD storage, 8 GB RAM, unlimited bandwidth and 3 IPs.
For Linux VPS, you can make a free choice between cPanel and Plesk when it comes to the control panel, and for Windows VPS, Plesk is what you can get.

It seems that Gate.com VPS plans are affordable, but in fact, they have not topped our recommendation list because there are numerous better options which are far more reliable.

Gate.com Refund Policies & Billing Scam Complaints 1.00 of 5

For both shared hosting and VPS, Gate.com guarantees a refund period of 30 days. You can receive a full refund excluding the setup fees and domain fees if you cancel your account within this period. No refund is available for any account terminated beyond the guaranteed time.

As soon as your cancellation takes effect, your access to the control panel will be terminated immediately. However, there might lie a trick. Gate.com has been accused much for unauthorized billing after customers' accounts are cancelled. So many users doubt whether the company has cancelled their accounts for real. Contacting the support team does not always result in a return of the money.
